About UU Encoding

What is UU Encoding?

UU Encoding is a method of translating binary files to ASCII text files. This allows people to send binary files to others via electronic mail, USENET news, and other text only methods of communication.

Why UU Encode?

UU Encoding is a standard which has been in use for several years. There are newer encodings, such as MIME and Base 64, but these do not work with older e-mail and news systems. Remember: E-mail messages must use systems other than just the sender and receiver's systems. They must be handled by several systems along the way, which may or may not support MIME and Base 64.

What does a UU Encoded file look like?

A UU Encoded file has a begin line with file permissions and a filename, an end line, and several lines of data in between.

Here is a sample UU Encoded file. When you UU Decode this file, you get this image (smile1.gif):

If you UU Decode this file on a UNIX system, it will have the permissions 755. I will not explain UNIX permissions here, because that would be a whole other lesson.
