Linux Distributions
CyberMan Software is proud to distribute Debian, Red Hat, and CMS Linux.
CMS Linux is now available!
What is Linux?
Linux is a free operating system designed by Linus Torvalds and modeled after traditional Unix. It is available in bundles called distributions. Each distribution contains a kernel (the core of the operating system) and a bunch of accessory programs.
Is it (LIH' nuks), (LIE' nuks), or (LEE' nuks)?
Hear from its creator: [ English | Swedish ]
More in-depth information about what Linux is can be found at http://www.linux.org/.
The distributions currently available from CyberMan Software are:
- CMS Linux 2.4.18 [ Details | Commercial ideas ]: Stripped down copy of Red Hat. It has much of Red Hat's internationalization removed as well as most of the high-end server stuff. This distro is geared explicitly for the desktop system, though it has some basic server capability (ethernet connected dorm room website, anyone?). CMS Linux has the Crypto API patched into the kernel and utilities for using encrypted file systems (personal financial records, anyone?).
- Seawolf 7.1 or Enigma 7.2: Very popular commercial distribution with much support from Red Hat Software, Inc. Red Hat Software, Inc. does not allow third party vendors to sell copies of their distro under the name "Red Hat®" without special permission, so these copies are sold as "Seawolf" and "Enigma", which are Red Hat's nicknames for these releases. The CD's are burned from unmodified ISO images downloaded from an official Red Hat mirror FTP server.
- Debian 2.2r5 (potato): Strictly noncommercial distribution from a large group of volunteers. Support is widely available from the open source community for this and all Linux distros.
Each of these distributions is $15.00 each. Please specify on the order form whether you want the source code included at no extra cost. Due to this economical pricing, there is no printed documentation included. Electronic documentation is available on the CD's themselves.
CyberMan Software has a distribution now. It is based on Red Hat 7.x, but has some of Red Hat's "ideosyncracies" fixed. The version number is 2.4.18, coresponding to the kernel release that comes with it. It is the latest stable kernel release.
CMS Linux costs $15.00 regularly, but for a limited time you will be able to get it for $7.50 if you send in, with your order, a broken in half original, legal installation CD-ROM of any proprietary operating system from any company based in Redmond, WA.
